MSIS Major FAQ

MANAGEMENT SCIENCE AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Rutgers Undergraduate Business Program
New Brunswick Campus

The MSIS major is one of the five majors offered by Rutgers' undergraduate business program on the New Brunswick campus.  The other majors are accounting, finance, management, and marketing.

The MSIS major is about using computer technology in business.  This focus divides into two related areas:

  • Structuring, managing, and presenting business information on computer systems.  This area is called "Management Information Systems", the "MIS" in "MSIS".

  • Using computer-aided analysis to make good business decisions.  This area is sometimes called "Management Science", and is the "MS" in "MSIS".

MSIS is the only information technology major at Rutgers that is a full-fledged business major.  MSIS majors take the same business core courses as other business majors, including basic accounting, finance, management, and marketing.  These core courses are not open to students outside the school of business.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I heard the MSIS major was "canceled".  Is that true?

No.  The university requires a minimum of 15 students in order to offer the major.  In any given year, if at least 15 students admitted to the business school select MSIS as their first choice major, the major will be offered.  If there are less than 15, any students selecting MSIS as their first choice will be assigned to their second choice major instead (assuming they meet its qualifications)

  2. How do I try to sign up for the MSIS major?

When you apply to the school of business in the fall of your sophomore year, just rank MSIS as your first choice major.

  3. Could ranking MSIS first hurt my chances of being assigned to my second choice major?

    No.

  4. Are there good jobs for MSIS majors after graduation?

Yes.  Despite what you may have heard about outsourcing and offshoring, the job market for information technology graduates like MSIS majors remains strong.  Employers value MSIS's mix of information technology, quantitative analysis, and general business training.

  5. What kind of jobs do MSIS majors get?  Is is all computer programming?

MSIS prepares students for careers in a wide range of industries.  Our students are hired by information technology, consulting, accounting, financial, and numerous other kinds of firms.  Demand is particularly strong from consulting and accounting firms that perform "IT audits" to help clients improve their business processes and information systems.  Computer programming is at most a secondary part of a typical MSIS graduates' job responsibilities.

  6. How about minors and double majors?

As with all business majors, it is not possible to minor in MSIS.  If you want to combine a business major with a minor or second major in computer science or mathematics, MSIS has the advantage of allowing you to "double count" some computer science and mathematics courses as business electives.  Contact the MSIS department for a list of such courses.
